How can I report a lost pet?

Lost or Stray Animals

Lost or Found an Animal?

Read below for some quick tips on how you can help lost or found pets reunite with their families. Cache Humane Society is an Adoption Center and Community Clinic. While we are happy to help in any way we can, we are unable to house lost pets at our facility. We will refer lost or stray animals to the appropriate animal control agency that can best help them reunite with their families. Cache Humane Society can not legally accept lost or stray animals until they have completed their mandatory impound period at a government facility.

Your Pet is Missing? Here's What To Do:

If you have lost a pet, following these steps can help reunite them with you:

Step 1: Immediately search your home and surrounding areas. Reach out to your neighbors and let them know that your pet is missing. Ask them for permission to search their property or if they would search their property for you.

Step 2: Contact Animal Control and let them know your pet is missing. Check local shelters and veterinary offices. Don’t forget to check your local municipal shelter where animal control may take found animals.

Step 3: Post on social media. Almost every city has a residents-run Facebook group, but some good places to start posting are: KSL Lost and Found PetsUtah Lost and FoundCache Valley Lost Pets, and Cache Valley 411.

Step 4: Make a flyer with a good picture and contact information. You can share any flyers with us at admin@cachehumane.org

Step 5: Maintain a base where your pet went missing. Leave something with your pet’s scent, like a litterbox or bed, some food, and water.

Found a Pet? Here's What To Do:

If you found a pet, following these steps can help reunite them with their owner.

Step 1: Check the animal for any signs of ownership. Hopefully, the animal will have a tag with contact information.

Step 2: Contact Animal Control for the community where you found the animal.  Animal Control may already be helping the owner with their search.  They will also check ID and rabies tags on collars and scan found animals for a microchip.

Step 3 : Ask around your neighborhood or surrounding area. Many animals have not travelled far from their owners and someone may know where their home is.

Step 4: Call local shelter and veterinarians to see if anyone is looking for a lost pet.

Step 5: Post on social media that you found an animal can help reunite them. Almost every city has a resident-run Facebook group, but some good places to start posting are: KSL Lost and Found Pets, Utah Lost and Found, and Cache Valley Lost Pets.

It Happens More Than You Think...

While we hope it never happens, hundreds of pets go missing each year. The best way to protect your pet is through prevention and proper identification.

Here’s how you can help keep your pet safe:

    • Secure your home, yard, and outdoor spaces.
    • Always use a leash or carrier when out and about.
    • Make sure your pet wears up-to-date identification at all times.
    • Consider a microchip and keep your microchip contact information up-to-date.

A microchip is a reliable, permanent form of ID that can help reunite you with your pet if they ever get lost. Cache Humane Society offers microchipping services at all of our Community Clinics.

And don’t forget—keeping your contact details current in the microchip registry is just as important as the chip itself.
